How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? While most people think of this occasion as a day set aside for romantic love, it is far more widespread than that. Valentine's Day encompasses love for sons & daughters, siblings, cousins, parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, friends, and even strangers. Where there is love living inside someone, Valentine's Day is found in that. It is found in the definition of love and it is the epitome of compassion. Just as important, transcribed deep within our own hearts, is the need for self-appreciation, nurture, and love, as it can be too easy to forget about yourself in the speed at which today’s world passes. Digging to the root of who you are and where your personality branches from is a crucial point to understanding the unique values and gifts you offer to others. With this, February 14th is also National Donor Day, which is quite notably the perfect day to share with Valentine's Day. In the aforementioned love for strangers on Valentine's Day, becoming a donor, whether it be organ, tissue, marrow, platelets, and/or blood will have a lasting message of love and compassion. Alarmingly, every two seconds in the United States, someone is in need of blood, which equals 41,000 daily blood donations needed. It is without a doubt that when one signs up to be a donor, they do so knowing that they will most likely never know the recipient of their donation. On this Valentine's Day, think about every family member that makes life so sweet, the children who so willingly paint this life in bright colors, the friends who create laughter and form community, yourself as a great and sympathetic being, and the stranger in need of the greatest form of life-giving love. Think a little bit deeper the next time someone raises the question of how Valentine's Day will be celebrated, and also think about how love can be spread not only on Valentine's Day, but in the simple and the complex moments of everyday life.
“…and the greatest of these is love.”
